Blackjack Strategy and the 0.5% Edge
Blackjack is famous for having the lowest house edge, often around 0.5%. However, this number assumes you play perfectly. If you play by gut feeling, the edge can jump to 2% or higher. You must use a basic strategy card that tells you exactly when to hit, stand, double down, or split based on your cards and the dealer's upcard.
- Table rules: Look for tables that pay 3 to 2 for blackjack instead of 6 to 5, which adds 1.4% to the edge.
- Dealer actions: Games where the dealer must stand on soft 17 offer a lower edge than those where the dealer hits.
- Deck count: Fewer decks in the shoe generally favor the player if the other rules remain the same.
